Ginger Paulsen, Executive Director of the National Alliance on Mental Illness - Nevada, will speak about the challenges of working with those suffering from mental illness. Mental illness is borne by our family members, friends and co-workers. The National Alliance on Mental Illness helps foster understanding on this subject which all too often is treated as a taboo topic to be avoided.
1/26 - Mariluz Garcia
The Director of Dean's Future Scholars (DFS) at the University of Nevada, Reno speaks about the tremendous program offering a head start to low-income, first-generation college students. Each year students are identified in sixth grade from selected Title 1 schools throughout the Washoe County School District for participation in DFS.
2/02 - Dr. Alan G. Stavitsky
Dr. Al Stavitsky is the Dean of the Donald W. Reynolds School of Journalism at UNR. He will share his thoughts on the "State of the News Media" in this time of tweets, agendas, and fake news. How is our republic going to sort it all out?

ACHIEVEMENT BEYOND OBSTACLES (formerly known as the Most Improved Student Program)
The Achievement Beyond Obstacles Programn (formerly known as the Most Improved Student Program) is one of the major programs sponsored by Reno South Rotary and is unique in its recognition of students who have overcome obstacles to position themselves for college or education in various professional trades. Each year, two students from each Washoe County High School are chosen for overall improvement in not just grades, but social skill, community service and those who have surmounted particular hardships in their personal and family lives. Selected students receive scholarships and attend a hosted luncheon for themselves and family or mentors.
